William G. Close Dies At The Age of 75 Years.

William G. Close, an old and esteemed resident of Saginaw, died at his home, 171 Bay Street, at 2:40 o'clock yesterday morning of a combination of diseases and old age. Deceased was born in Fairfield County, Connecticut, 75 years ago. When a young man he went to Albion, N.Y. It is said that when he was 18 years of age he was captain of a boat on the Erie Canal, for which James A. Garfield drove the mules. George M. Pullman was carpenter on the same boat. Mr. Close acted as chief of the fire department at Albion for a number of years. He came to Saginaw 29 years ago and has resided in this city since that time. During the first few years of his residence here he was engaged in the shoe business on Water, now Niagra, street.

Deceased was twice married. His second wife survives him. Besides his wife, a son and daughter by his first wife, William H. Close, of Duluth, and Katherine Close of Albion, N.Y., survive him; also three sons and two daughters by his second wife, Fred B., Gilbert and George and Minnie R. and Allie, all residing in this city. Mr. Close leaves a large estate, holding property in Saginaw, Albion, Jamestown and Mt. Pleasant.

In business dealings, he was strictly honest. He was highly esteemed and all who knew him mourn the loss of an honorable, upright citizen. The funeral will take place from the residence at 2 o'clock Sunday Afternoon.
