Charles Berry Close (1889) was born at Moonta, South Australia, the son of William Close (1855) and Helen Gusling.
He enlisted in the 43rd Infantry Battalion in 1916 and served in France where he was wounded in 1917. He was subsequently discharged due to his injuries in 1917. His rank at this point was Corporal. He was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
