William Close (1833) was born at Nunda, New York, the son of John Close (1804) and Rebecca Van Dyke.
William enlisted at age 28 as a private in the 136th Regiment of Infantry Company in the New York Volunteer Infantry on 27th August 1862. He was wounded in 1864 at Kentucky but recovered and was subsequently promoted to Corporal.
