Note: Colonist, Volume L, Issue 12201, 26 March 1908, Page 2 Colonist, Volume L, Issue 12201, 26 March 1908, Page 2 OBITUARY. Another old settler in the person of Mrs Eliza Symes Epps, passed away at her residence, Nile street East. on Monday last, aged 74 years. Deceased was the eldest daughter of the late Mr Stephen Close, and she came to New Zealand with her parents in the good ship Mary Ann in the year 1842. She was married twice, to Mr J. C. M. Karsten and Mr Thomas Epps, both of whom she survived, and by her first marriage had ten children, seven daughters and three sons, eight of whom are still living. The late Mrs Epps resided in Nelson 66 years, and experienced many vicissitudes in the early days of the settlement. It was her pleasure to converse on the many interesting events that took place in the days gone by. She with her parents, witnessed the wreck of the Fifeshire on the Arrow Rock, near the old entrance of the harbor, and saw the first ship, the Phoenix, launched in Nelson. The vessel went to sea shortly afterwards, and was never heard of again. Her father and "the late Mr James Puller started the first saw pit in the birch forest over the Maitai river, now cleared and occupied by smiling homesteads. The deceased lady was a good mother and a kind and generous friend. The family will have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their bereavement. The funeral took place yesterday morning the remains being interred in the new cemetery |
