Note: Leicester Chronicle - Saturday 6 April 1872 Leicester Chronicle - Saturday 6 April 1872 On Monday afternoon an inquest was held at the Kegworth Station Inn before Mr Coroner Heath touching the death of two men named John Clark, aged 27 years and Nathan Clowes aged 53 years, who were killed on the Midland Railway on Saturday last. The jury having been sworn proceeded to view the bodies which were dreadfully mutilated, ClarkeÆs head and face especially being smashed to such a degree that they could not be recognised. The following evidence was then taken ... ... The jury then retired for some time, after which they returned a verdict ôthat the deceased men were killed by railway waggons at Ratcliffe-on-Soar from the defective action of the points: the jury are also of the opinion that the new portion of the line in that district was mis-managed and they consider that the engine driver and guard of the ballast train were blameworthy.ö Both men came from the neighbourhood of Leicester, Clowes living at Countesthorpe and Clark at Blaby. |
