A Governor of Bury Grammar School, 1821-33. Of Broughton Old Hall, near Manchester. Succeeded to the family estates in 1833. Gave the valuable site and endowment for the Church of St John-the-Evangelist, at Broughton. A keen horticulturist; left his fine collection of orchidaceous plants to the Royal Gardens, Kensington. A collector of works of art, pictures, etc. Died unmarried Sept. 28, 1846, at Broughton Hall. M.I. at Broughton. Brother of Samuel (1793).
