There seems to be some debate as to
whether Barrow-in-Furness belongs in Lancashire or
Cumberland. Census records for the 19th Century all have
it as Lancashire, whereas the Birth, Death and Marriage
references seem to be Cumberland. To avoid any
unpleasantness we've gone with whatever the reference
says. Nowadays it's officially part of
Cumbria.
On this page we've gone with Cumberland
for no other reason than the general feeling that nobody
wants to be classed as a Lancastrian if they can avoid
