We've managed to find a document containing the Grinton Parish registers from 1640 to 1807!

This is a digital copy of a book published by the Yorkshire Parish Register Society in 1905. It contains the Grinton Registers dating from 1640 up to 1807 for Baptisms, Marriages and Burials. There are gaps, as the original text explains, but this seems to be due to missing registers.

The book was scanned using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, which is highly dependent on the quality of the original text. OCR scanning is not 100% reliable and there are many oddities in the result.

As you will see, in many places the scanned text has obvious mistakes. We haven’t altered any of the text because the human brain is far better at spotting patterns than computers. In the vast majority of cases it’s fairly obvious what the word should be, particularly where names are concerned.
We’ve generated a Table of Contents from the general headings within the document. These are partly from the text in the document together with the years, some of which we’ve inserted. This should, in theory, make for easier navigation, although we haven’t changed any text so some entries may look odd.
All-in-all this is a brilliant resource for anybody looking to trace families in Swaledale, and in particular the parish of Grinton. The scanned text may be a bit ropey in places but it’s no worse than trying to decipher hand-written registers on microfiche.
