People Update

A huge GEDCOM file of information from Wendy Thompson that has been languishing in the "To Do" list for a couple of years. Charting the progress of a branch of Irish Closes from Belfast, Ireland to Ontario, Canada.

Many thanks to Wendy for sending us this ... and for her patience in waiting for us to get around to it.

So, this release is a collection of Belfast Closes starting in the 1890's and finishing up in Ontario in the 20th Century. Adding 160 new people.

In particular, the family and descendents of John Close.

132 NEW!!

People Update

Following a trip up to North Yorkshire some time ago I came across a nest of Closes in the graveyard of the Church of St Andrew in Winston, Durham. There were 8 in total, all seemingly related to each other.

So, this release is a sweep of Winston to join all the dots. It starts in 1675 and runs through to 1901 ... a certain James Close was responsible for the whole lot.

Adding 135 new BMD and Census images, 132 new people, 8 gravestones, and a Masonic link.

In particular, the family and descendents of James Close (1675) producing another dynasty in and around Winston, Durham.

People Update

After completing the sweep on the Grinton registers, it left a number of people hanging around in the 19th century with only a partial picture. So, this update flushes all those out by adding 180 new BMD and Census images, and 111 new people.

In particular, the family and descendents of:

Anthony Close (1849)
George Close (1813)
Isabella Close (1778)
Isabella Close (1814)
James Close (1793)
Joseph Close (1821)
Mary Close (1780)
Richard Close (1795)
Robert Close (1852)
Rose Close (1782)
Ruth Close (1786)
William Close (1762)

It's also produced a whole new dynasty based in the Halifax, Yorkshire area.

334 NEW!!

People Update

What started out again as another small interesting update turned into another mega update... 334 new people occupying the Grinton Registers. This is the whole lot from the 17th Century up to the 1840's recorded in Grinton.

The problem here is that there are huge gaps, some as big as 12 years. Couple that with the sheer number of James Close's around at any given time and it becomes just about impossible to tell who belongs to who. Any hoo ... what you see is what you get. If you spot any obvious howlers (and there will be some!) then please let us know.

Site Update

The site's turned into a bit of a monster and unfortunately so have the costs of keeping it going. So, to try to cover some of these we've put together a few goodies that we hope will tempt you into adding a few pounds into our coffers. We're not here to make money and anything left over will be used to buy Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates ... or anything else that adds value.

It started as a free resource, and that's the way it's going to stay. However, all contributions will be very gratefully received.

Site Update

Margaret Southgate (nee Close), one of our contributors, has taken up the mantle of a "One-Namer" of the Close surname. She would like anybody who is researching Close ancestors to provide whatever they can towards her endeavour. Given that we're a prolific bunch of breeders she's set herself a mammoth task!

You can find out more about what Margaret is up to at her Guild of One-Name Studies profile

The profile page will allow you contact Margaret via e-mail, and contains her efforts so far.

Please give her a hand if at all possible.

Welcome to www.CloseAncestry.com

OK, we're up and running ... maybe a bit ragged in places but we take the view that it's better to have something rather than nothing
